How did the idea for this unique project COME ABOUT, and what was your vision when planning it?
Daniel Mächler: Besides the wonderful hillside location with a view of the lake, the particular challenge of this plot was building on the second building depth. The plot was not regularly accessible. The large building structure facing the street contains the entire redevelopment for the two single-family villas.
René Arndt: The key is to design houses or apartments that are desirable for a large number of people, i.e. that are highly adaptable for the future homeowners. It is also very important to take the location into account, with the views, the necessary privacy and the qualities of the floor plans.
What architectural features particularly CHARACTERISE this project?
Daniel Mächler: The appearance of the ensemble should reflect a calm and functional elegance. Clear forms meet lovingly designed surroundings and thus generate added value.
René Arndt: The design must also fulfil a number of criteria on a functional level. In addition to the location, residential structures should be taken into account. The granularity should match that of the site as well as the neighbourhood. Factors such as the orientation of the sun and possible sources of noise should also be ideally incorporated into the design and thus considered from the very beginning. And then the best possible views should be reconciled with maximum privacy. This ultimately leads to a design that expresses harmony in an architectural sense.
For which clientele are these apartments and Villas designed?
René Arndt: The apartments and the two villas are designed in such a way that the owners can move around in their private sphere according to their individual needs. The layout of the rooms is designed so that the living spaces can be used in a versatile way. The focus is always on the living space.
What materials did you choose for this project and why?
Daniel Mächler: The sculptural appearance of the white body of the facade is contrasted and framed by bronze-coloured elements.
René Arndt: The strong, horizontal highlighting of the structures and the architecture in general is intended to emphasize the proximity to the earth. The plastered facades are supported by vertical, more delicate elements. This is intended to reflect the delicate expression of Oberrieden as a beautiful former farming village.
